Cambodia isn’t known for beaches. I mean, if you have been to Kep or Sikounville you know what I am talking about. The beaches are dirty and the water isn’t really clear.
Do you still want a beach holiday on your Cambodia trip? Hell yeah! Koh Rong isn’t a secret to backpackers anymore. The island grown over the past years and even includes a sky bar now. Internet is available as well as 24/7 electricity and hot water. Cheap hostels and beach side bungalow made their new home here. Hangovers from the nightly happy hour parties can be cured with white beaches and clear waters.
If you are like me and like a glass of wine on the beach instead of a hangover party, check out Koh Rong Samloem. The small sister is just a short boat ride from Koh Rong.

What to expect

Samloem hasn’t been spoiled by backpacker parties YET. The island is quiet and restaurants close by 10pm - and that's the latest.nAre you on a budget? Expect no 24/7 electricity as most beach bungalows are running on generators and just on certain times of the day. - Same for hot showers. You can easily get a little bungalow along the beach for under $20.nAre you in a honeymoon mood? Or have a bigger budget? Welcome to my holiday on Samloem. Before I arrived I googled hotels and my choices were not the cheapest ones. Once in a while you need a break from hostel life, right?

Samloem Laguna Resort & The One Resort

A new resort recently just opened and the pictures looked incredible. Private beach included. The best, it was 40% off due to new opening. What else would I want? At the pier I was greeted by the staff of the resort who took my luggage and me on board of a small fishing boat. We left the white beach towards to forest of the island.
Unfortunately here started the trouble. Greeted by a staff member, I was told the restaurant wasn't open yet. Oh well, there was enough choice of places on the main beach so I wasn't bothered too much. The bungalow itself was beautiful with view of the ocean - and all the rubbish from the building site they still had going on. Kinda spoiled the atmosphere I was looking for. Either way, I settled into the new and beautiful bungalow. Internet was slow to non existing but I was expecting that. In the evening I tried to walk from the resort to the main beach. There was no path or light. Half way through it I met a barking dog so I turned around in the mud and made my way back to the resort. Still hungry, a staff member gave me a lift in the small boat to the main beach. That night I ate at the One resort - an expensive upper-market resort with own pool and bungalows directly on the white beach.
I wasn't the happiest person in my resort but I decided it wasn't the worst plus it was low-priced due to the opening discount. I turned on the fan and went to bed. Next morning I woke up sweaty and the fan was off. Neither I had light in the bathroom which had no windows. By then I was told electrify would be only available between 6pm and 6am which I hadn't been told before. Annoyed and about to explode I packed up my stuff and checked out. I'm sure this resort gonna be awesome one day but It still has a long way to go. Before checking out, the chef and me made up a menu for the non existing restaurant. Maybe one day soon they will have one. I decided to kill my budget and checked into the beautiful One Resort where I enjoyed the next week with lots of rose wine, sitting on swings along the beach and swimming in the pool. The One Resort offered Wifi, 24 hours elecirticy and even air-conditioning. It's higher priced than most hotels on the island but after all I was there to get a break from the hostel life and spoil myself.

Things to do

Dive

There is a dive school on Koh Rong who isn’t happy to pick you from Samloem - i tried - but if you make your way by yourself to Koh Rong you can join in for fun dives, snorkelling or even do your PADI. Boat departs twice a day between islands and cost $5 each way.

Visit Lazy Beach

The island has lots of different beaches, from the White Heaven beach to the quiet Lazy Beach. Lazy Beach, located on the other side of the island, can be reached by walking through the island. The jungle path starts at the Octopussy bar - yeah that's the name - and ends at the Lazy Beach Bungalows. If you are lucky you will get to see some monkeys. I was basically alone when I was there. The sea was rough - time of the year - and I was advised not to swim by staff of the bungalows. Either way the beach with the orange sand is beautiful and a great place to hang out to relax or to eat some great ENGLISH food. I’m talking Heinz beans breakfast and fish and chips.
